It sample is composed by 125 artifacts which were made by the dry fruit’s rind from the Lagenaria sp. Species. Its common name is mate. Since the earliest periods it was the traditional material used to make recipients.

It is important to mention that the mates that were catalogued are related to the late periods associated with the Ancon, Chancay and Chimu’s styles.

Between the principal shapes there were bowls and dishes. However there was also caleros and tapas. Some of them presented repairing made during prehispanic times. They used thread and resin. This showed the constant use and the importance that was given to the artifact.

Presence of mates with pyrography designs where there are simple and complex designs, naturalistic designs, such as stylized birds and wave- like design; as abstracs designs like geometric figures are being represented.

There were some cases where different artifacts inside the mates were identified. Some of these were cal, textiles, botanic remains like seeds, cotton, fiber, etc.; malacological remains, etc. In Peru, one type of cucumber commonly known as “mate” (Lagenaria siceraria) served as prime material for the elaboration of recipients. With the pottery appeareance, its shape would be taken as a model for the vessels production. Since the first periods until nowadays, the mate has been used to contain liquids and grains. Furthermore, it also served as a space for an artistic expression. We can find in their surface human and supernatural figures, animals and plants.

In the collection there are mates with designs related to the ocean with waves, marine birds and fish.
