Ancon is one of the most important cultural complexes from the entire central Peruvian coast. Some archaeologists have not doubt in qualifying them as key sites for archaeological research. These reasons were the start to create a museum in Ancon.
In 1967, by interest of Dr. Alejandro Miró Quesada Garland and the engineer Horacio Alberti Nicolini the Site Museum Board and Cultural Activities from Ancon was constituted with the purpose of recollecting funds to construct a site museum that could deposit the most important archaeological findings.
In 1992, the research archaeological center of Ancon is created (C.I.A.A.) by a suscrit agreement between the Art Museum from Lima and the Site Museum Board and Cultural Activities from Ancon. The principal goal is to have a permanent job of the research from the Ancon Archaeological Heritage and the creation of a permanent exhibition gallery. Thanks to this agreement in 1993 this work was done with the inauguration of the permanent exhibition gallery that offered a global vision from Ancon’s past. Furthermore, in the year 2006 the special archaeological project of Caral- Supe and the Site Museum Board and Cultural Activities from Ancon signed an inter institutional agreement. They had the goal to present a section about "Caral- Supe- the oldest civilization from America". It is part of the permanent exhibition now.
Nowadays, the Ancon museum has been making archaeological courses for children, new exhibition galleries, digital catalogue, and preventive conservation works of the archaeological material that it has. This is as part of collaboration between the Faculty of Humanities from PUCP and the Site Museum Board and Cultural Activities from Ancon, promoted by Dr. Krzysztof Makowski and directed by Lic. Lucía Watson Jiménez, archaeologist from PUCP.
The Ancon museum has been inaugurated with non profits, with the principal objective to conservate, research, exhibit, and divulgate the archaeological heritage that it has. Moreover, the museum organizes different cultural activities with the coordination of teachers from schools. This is as part of the educational program. Some of these activities include contests, monographic works, drawings, paintings related to cultural heritage from the place, conferences, courses for teachers, workshops for children and teenagers, archaeological courses for children, etc.
